2023 11:3 – Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. [cf. II Pet. 1:19-21 – We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.] 11:14 – And they set themselves in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great deliverance. [There were many captains – captains of thousands and captains of hundreds (Num. 31:14,48,52,54; Deu. 1:15; I Sam. 22:7; II Sam. 18:1; I Chr. 13:1; 26:26; 27:1; 28:1; 29:6; II Chr. 1:2; 25:5). Apparently Joab was already one of these captains, and after Joab conquered the Jebusites David made him the chief captain. It is only after Jerusalem was conquered under the command of David (II Sam. 5:6-9; I Chr. 11:4-8) that we have records of Joab having the title captain of the host (II Sam. 17:25; 19:13; 24:2; I Kings 1:19; 11:15).] 12:2 – They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin. [cf. Judg. 3:15 – But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab. Judg. 20:15-16 – And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
