[The first six sons listed (those in verse 1) were born by Leah. Joseph and Benjamin were born by Rachel. For some reason Dan is listed before Joseph and Benjamin, even though he was born by a handmaid, as were Naphtali, Gad, and Asher, and even though the sons are not listed in absolute birth order.]
