How Joshua 16:2 Stood Out

Joshua 16:2 (2022) – And goeth out from Beth-el to Luz, and passeth along unto the borders of Archi to Ataroth [John Gill indicates that Jacob spent the night at a field adjacent to Luz, and that the name Beth-el which he gave it applied at first to this field, and later to the whole area including the city of Luz. This is supported by Gen. 28:19 – And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first. Note that here Beth-el applies to that place but that Luz applies to that city. See also Gen. 35:6 – So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Beth-el, he and all the people that were with him. Josh. 18:13 – And the border went over from thence toward Luz, to the side of Luz, which is Beth-el, southward; and the border descended to Ataroth-adar, near the hill that lieth on the south side of the nether Beth-horon. Judg. 1:23 – And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.). But later a city was built and called Luz, and kept its name – see Judg. 1:23-26 – And the house of Joseph sent to descry Beth-el. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.) And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family. And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.]
