2023 25:2 – And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart. [cf. Prov. 15:3 – The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.] 25:4 – But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin. [cf. Deu. 24:16 – The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin. Jer. 31:29-30 – In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge. But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge. Ezek. 18:20 – The soul that sinneth, it shall die. And the LORD hearkened to Hezekiah, and healed the people. Amen.] 25:13 – But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil. [Beth-horon had belonged to the tribe of Ephraim (Josh. 21:20-22), which was north of Judah, and Samaria was even further north than was Beth-horon. But Asa king of Judah had taken cities from Ephraim (II Chr. 15:8; 17:2). Commentators point out that the cities of Samaria and Beth-horon are listed in a north-to-south order, providing evidence that the soldiers had already returned home to the northern kingdom, had meditated and plotted revenge, and then proceeded back southward to execute their plot. The immediate motive for revenge, of course, was that they had been hired to fight but then sent back home without having the opportunity to do the job for which they had been called (II Chr. 25:5-10). A more remote motive for revenge can be found in the fact that, in the past (in the time of Asa), as we have already seen, Judah had taken those cities from Ephraim (II Chr. 15:8; 17:2).] 27:3 – He built the high gate of the house of the LORD, and on the wall of Ophel he built much.
