2023 18:1 – Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance, and joined affinity with Ahab. [cf. 19:2 – And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD. II Cor. 6:14-18 – Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon: Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant. II Tim. 4:2-4 – Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. II Kings 1:16 – And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron, is it not because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die. II Pet. 1:18-21 – And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 2021 18:1 – Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance, and joined affinity with Ahab. [cf. Deu. 8:11-12,14,17-18 – Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; ... Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; ... And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. As the subsequent verses show, Jehoshaphat had not completely forsaken the LORD his God, but joining affinity with an evil king was a step in that direction (see 19:2).] 18:5 – Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king's hand. 18:18 – Again he said, Therefore hear the word of the LORD; I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne, and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left. [cf. Is. 6:1 – In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.] 19:3 – Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God. [Seeking God requires preparation of our hearts. Our primary motive for seeking God needs to be love for Him rather than what we might gain from it.] 19:6 – And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment. 20:3 – And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. [cf. Luke 9:51 – And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem. We have to determine in our hearts to seek God and persevere in it.] 20:5 – And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court [The court of the priests, which contained the altar, was probably renewed the same time the altar was renewed by Jehoshaphat's father Asa (II Chr. 15:8).] 20:11 – Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. [cf. II Chr. 6:27 – Then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou hast taught them the good way, wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given unto thy people for an inheritance. "earth ... is ... the ... Lord's" (Ex. 9:29; Deu. 10:14; Ps. 24:1; I Cor. 10:26,28)] 20:15 – And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. [cf. I Sam. 17:47 – And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.] 20:19 – And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. ["lift* ... up ... voice*" (I Chr. 15:16; II Chr. 5:13; Is. 24:14; 40:9; 42:11; 52:8; Acts 4:24)] 20:21 – And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. ["beauty ... holiness" (I Chr. 16:29; II Chr. 20:21; Ps. 29:2; 96:9)] 20:21 – And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. ["for his mercy endureth for ever" (I Chr. 16:34; II Chr. 5:13; 7:3; 20:21; Ezra 3:11; Ps. 106:1; 107:1; 118:29; 136:1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26; Jer. 33:11); cf. Rom. 9:15,18 – For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. ... Is. 55:7 – Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.] 20:25 – And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. [This may seem odd on the battlefield, but compare Judg. 8:24-26 – And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that was on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that were about their camels' necks. John Wesley comments that riches can be used to bribe enemy officers, as well as, of course, to buy necessary supplies.]
