2023 10:4 – Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee. [cf. This indicates that they knew the value of hard work, but that Solomon had been unreasonable in his demands.] 10:11 – For whereas my father put a heavy yoke upon you, I will put more to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. And his mother's name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom. II Chr. 11:20 – And after her he took Maachah the daughter of Absalom; which bare him Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and Shelomith. Some commentators explain that the differences in the names of Abijah's ancestors can be accounted for by his mother being a granddaughter of Abishalom (a variant spelling of Absalom) rather than a direct daughter. This is entirely plausible since "son" in the Scripture does not always mean direct son, but descendant. Additional evidence supporting this explanation is found in II Sam. 14:27 – And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair countenance. Michaiah can be a variant of the name Maachah, and Uriel could have been the husband of Tamar.] 13:5 – Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? ["covenant ... of ... salt" (Num. 18:19 – All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee. Lev. 2:13 – And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt. [A covenant of salt is an everlasting covenant. Salt preserves. Commentators note that salt is the opposite of the corrupting kind of leaven (such as yeast, a fermenting agent). Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven (Ex. 34:25). No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven (Lev. 2:11).]] 13:9 – Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
