What Stood Out in Today's Bible Reading
2023 14:3 – And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did. [cf. II Chr. 35:21 – But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? CONTRAST Prov. 18:1 – Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.] 14:15 – Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did, and his might, and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [cf. v. 18 – And the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? v. 28 – Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? Rev. 20:12 – And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.] 14:16 – And Jehoash slept with his fathers, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead. [cf. v. 22 – He built Elath, and restored it to Judah, after that the king slept with his fathers. v. 29 – And Jeroboam slept with his fathers, even with the kings of Israel; and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead. Luke 20:37-38 – Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. [cf. v. 20 – And they brought him on horses: and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David. Rom. 6:3-4 – Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.] 14:24 – And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. [cf. Prov. 15:3 – The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. Heb. 4:13 – Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Ecc. 12:13-14 – Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. [cf. II Pet. 1:19-21 – We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.] 14:26 – For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter: for there was not any shut up, nor any left, nor any helper for Israel. Ps. 10:12-14 – Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble. Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. Heb. 13:5-6 – Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.] 15:3 – And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah had done [cf. v. 34 – And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD: he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done. Prov. 15:3 – The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good.] 15:6 – And the rest of the acts of Azariah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? [cf. v. 11 – And the rest of the acts of Zachariah, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. v. 15 – And the rest of the acts of Shallum, and his conspiracy which he made, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. v. 21 – And the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? v. 26 – And the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. v. 31 – And the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. v. 36 – Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? Luke 20:37-38 – Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.] 15:7 – So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead. [cf. v. 38 – And Jotham slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father: and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead. Rom. 6:3-4 – Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.] 15:9 – And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. [cf. v. 18 – And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. v. 24 – And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. v. 28 – And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.] 15:9 – And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. [cf. Ps. 37:27-28 – Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore. For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.]
2022 14:6 – But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin. [cf. Rom. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.] 14:10 – Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thine heart hath lifted thee up: glory of this, and tarry at home: for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? [cf. Prov. 16:18 – Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. "heart* ... lift* ... up" (Deu. 8:11-14; Deu. 17:18-20; II Kings 14:10; II Chr. 25:19; 26:16; 32:25; Ezek. 28:2-8,17; 31:10-11; Dan. 5:20-21; 11:12; CONTRAST Lam. 3:41 – Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.)] 14:27 – And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven: but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash. [cf. Rev. 3:5 – He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.] 15:12 – This was the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu, saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation. And so it came to pass. [cf. I Kings 17:24 – And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth. John 17:17 – Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. "word of truth" (Ps. 119:43; II Cor. 6:7; Eph. 1:13; II Tim. 2:15; James 1:18)]
2021 14:7 – He slew of Edom in the
valley of salt ten thousand, and took Selah by war, and called
the name of it Joktheel unto this day. [This is the only place
in the King James Bible where this is used as the name of a city or
geographic location. Elsewhere the English translation Selah
is used as a stand-alone word in Psalms and Habakkuk. The Hebrew word here
in II Kings 14:7 is somewhat different from the Hebrew word in Psalms and
Habakkuk. The word used here in II Kings 14:7 means "rock" or "lofty," and
is commonly taken to refer to the city of Petra or some other elevated
rock area in Edom. The word used in Psalms and Habakkuk is sometimes taken
to signify "for ever" (appropriately symbolized by a rock) or an elevation
in pitch, so we can see its similarity to the word here in II Kings 14:7.] 14:13 – And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits. 14:28 – Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [cf. II Sam. 8:5-6 – And when the Syrians of Damascus came to succour Hadadezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went.] 14:28 – Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, and all that he did, and his might, how he warred, and how he recovered Damascus, and Hamath, which belonged to Judah, for Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? [cf. I Chr. 18:3,9-11; II Chr. 7:8] 15:10 – And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired
against him, and smote him [Zachariah the son of Jeroboam II]
before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead.
[shows that the people did not like him] 15:14 – For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, and came to Samaria, and smote Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. [the place from which the kings of the northern kingdom of Israel had reigned up until the time of Omri (I Kings 15:33; 16:8,15,23-24,29), after which they reigned from Samaria] 15:36-37 – 36 Now the rest of the acts of Jotham, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 37 In those days the LORD began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah. [The LORD did this even though Jotham ... did that which was right in the sight of the LORD (vv. 32,34). The fact that his son Ahaz ... did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD (16:2) can give us some idea as to why.]
2020 14:6 – But the children of the murderers he slew not: according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses, wherein the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but every man shall be put to death for his own sin. [in Adam all die (I Cor. 15:22)]
